Canola is more in demand than ever

Next to the traditional food market for canola, the renewable fuel market in Canada is catching fire. The demand to turn canola oil into a low-carbon fuel is growing in Canada’s backyard, and in Canada itself. Canada needs more canola to take full advantage of the new crushing demand and seed exports. The current demand of 1.8 million tonnes of canola seed for biofuel is projected to jump fourfold to 6.5 million by 2030, says Mr Chris Vervaet, executive director of the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association (COPA). Canadian biofuel demand of about one billion litres a year could more than double to 2.5 billion by 2030. A big chance for the Canadian farmers.
